Having done a multitude of interviews with various artists over the years, I can tell you that having an actual conversation rather than simply a question and answer session, is a rare commodity. Rarer still is finding someone who has the depth of intellect I found in Nick Nowell, former bassist and now vocalist for The Famine.

The band’s sophomore album on Solid State records, The Architects of Guilt was released this week, and it’s a disc you’ll certainly want to get your ears on. Read my review here.

I’ll be honest, when I got ready to chat with Nick I certainly wasn’t expecting a discourse on current events and politics. Consider that my own bit of self-ignorance. So I felt very fortunate and and honored to learn of and learn from The Famine‘s new front man.

While it took three attempts for us to finally connect, the end result was well worth the wait. Nick talks about the band’s triturating new album, new band mate Jon Richardson, the album’s disturbing artwork, his career outside of music, the murder of James Byrd Jr., the shooting of Gabby Gifford, the darkness of the West Memphis Three and much more…  Find out who is hero is and why he doesn’t have a bucket list.
